Nelson Mandela and Apartheid

Apartheid was a racial-segregation policy. This policy did not give any rights to the black, mixed or Indian population of Africa. It was from 1948 to 1994. Nelson Mandela was a man who wanted to abolish the apartheid, and was tired of apartheid policy. He wanted the liberation of Africans and minorities in Africa so he fought for Africa to gain unity and liberty. He also fought many violent acts to gain freedom in South Africa. His struggles for freedom, lead him to jail which gave him more popularity and lead him to presidency in Africa. He was charged with treason for speaking out against Apartheid He was a good president whose 27 years spent in prison allowed him to become stronger and wiser creating journals and books of ideas for his people and the road to independence. He used civil disobedience, gained trust of his people and was elected to be the president of South Africa. South Africa had more population of African American people, and they supported Nelsons ideas. His ideas of "civil disobedience" were inspired by Ghandi and used by Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders. His mission was to free the "oppressed and the oppressor". He didn’t give up serving for his country even after being punished for 27 years He was a hero because he used peaceful means to achieve his goals for his country. He fought many violent acts to gain freedom in South Africa. He was a great leader that Promoted and supported civil disobedience and the eliminating of people getting physical or killied by others as a way to prove their point. All his struggles awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993

African Independence

The Africans were slaves to Europe for a while. What had happened was the different nations in Europe came over in Africa and took over the land, they set up there own political boundaries. They went to there land to get resources to take back to Europe to sell back. It was like a big source of income. For example Cecil Rhodes took over what is now called Zimbabwe and he named it Rhodesia. He used Africans as slaves to get elephants tusks and rubber trees to make rubber. When world war II finsh the British were going to set up a government in Africa but later it was costing too much money to keep on coming back and fort. Controlling the country was being expensive so they gave Africa there Independence.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

In 1962, the Soviet Union eagerly wanted to attack United States. Soviet Union missiles weren’t that powerful. It could only be affective against Europe but on the other hand United States missiles were capable to destroy the whole Soviet Union, that’s why in 1962 Soviet Union planned to attack United States from Cuba. Soviet Union place there missiles in Cuba because it is easyer to attack from there. United states found out this secret in October 15 1962. This was found with the help of some photographs, which revealed the construction of Soviet Union missiles in Cuba. As soon as it was found out president John Kennedy was informed. He immediately put his 12 best adviser to handle this crisis. Kennedy order to quarantine the whole area around Cuba and also order to stop weapon to be shipped to Cuba. In a conference Kennedy proclaim that any missile attack from Cuba on United States will be regarded from Soviet Union. Kennedy warned Soviet Union to move there weapon from Cuba before United States take action against it. Every one knew about this crisis by October 25 1962. Both sides were worried bout it. They negotiate and soviet demanded United States to remove their missiles from Turkey in exchange for Soviet Union missiles from Cuba.

NATO and The Warsaw Pact

Soviet Union made a group called Warsaw Pact because they thought Nato was a threat. Warsaw Pact protected Soviet Union and Satalite Countries. It was made to reponde to the creation of Nato. Nato was made to pretoect Europe and North America.If one country was attacked in the Nato All the countries that are in the nato would help and protect that country.It was the same for Wrsaw Pact.We still have Nato today but Warsaw Pact is done cause we have no more comunism.

Night and Fog

In Schilders movie there was more information, but in Night and the Fog was interesting. The Nazi killed alot of Jews and tested on threr skin. They shaved the women hair to make clothes. They made the Jews naked to feel ashamed and low.

After WWI, Europe was left in bad conditions and Germany was blamed for war. Almost of Germany's territory was taken from them, and all of their land overseas was lost. The League of Nations took control of all their colonies. The war cost them about 10 percent of their land and their overseas colonies, were taken away by allies, who blamed Germany for their losses. On June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The treaty of Versailles was an official peace treaty which officially ended the war.

Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk)

Mustafa did alot of things to change the Turkey country. Mustafa Kemal was the first president of Turkey for 15 years, until he died in 1938. Mustafa Kemal got rid of the fez. He thought that the fez was a symbol of being back and living in the past. He also got rid of traditional clothing, making people wear western clothing. He gave women more rights, women stopped wearing the veil, which is a cloth worn by women over the head, shoulders, and often the face. He wanted turkey to be like Europe So the Turkish people had to wear trousers, drees shirt, ties and rimmed hat. He made the Turkey republic in 1923 which he was the ruler. He even had a language reform which was one of the hardest reforms people believe because they had to learn a whole new language. He changed Arabic writing and language in Latin which was the language of Europe.

Film Lesson Gandhi

I think Gandhi was a great leader. He never wanted his people to fight, I think that was bad because a lot of people got killed. Gandhi got arreated 4 times because the British wanted the Indians to be week ( without Gandhi the Indians are week because he was the the leader). India got its independence because the British felt bad that they killed alot of Indians, Gandhi wanted no violence, and if his people used violence he would fast for weeks. Gandhi was shot a few times by an A-hole. A lot of people was sad because of this death. If it wasn't for him, India would never get its independence in that decade (ten years).
